Shift was an exhibition hosted by Inverness Museum in 2019, showcasing the work of a group of makers from the Scottish Highlands alongside a group from Reykjavík, Iceland. The exhibition grew out of a collaborative exchange in which both groups drew inspiration from one another through research trips and studio visits in each other’s working environments.
Spending time immersed in a different culture allowed the makers to step away from their everyday practices, gain new perspectives, and reflect on their own work through the eyes of others. As part of the exchange, the Highland makers attended Iceland’s DesignMarch festival, where they exhibited their work.
For this project, I created a series of pots inspired by the awe-inspiring geological landscapes of Iceland. These included basalt beaches, geothermal hot springs edged with lush moss, and the striking contrast between blue glaciers and black volcanic rock.
